Lip balm is the best way to cure and prevent severely chapped lips. While both lips may be affected, the lower lip is the most common site. There may also be burning or the formation of large, painful cracks when the lips are stretched.  Note: If chronic, cheilitis can progress to crusting and bleeding.  If this should occur, please see your doctor or dermatologist for help in relieving this condition.

Everyone has experienced dry chapped lips at some point in their lives.  Similarly, some people experience it more than others.  Dry cracked lips may even bleed occasionally.  For a majority of individuals, dry chapped lips are a result of conscious or subconscious lip licking. This can lead to delicate skin on the lips similarly to dry hands caused by over washing.

If you are an outdoor person, you can develop dry chapped lips.  This is due to your frequent exposure to various weather conditions like direct sun, harsh winds and drastic temperatures in winter or in summer.  Some women notice that they have developed dry chapped lips if they switch to a certain lipstick or a lip gloss.  In addition, dry chapped lips could simply be a skin reaction to certain ingredients found in these products.  Therefore, when outdoors, always use a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.  Treatment Severe Chapped Lips - Lady applying lip balm

Medical Advisory:  I have included this page on Cheilitis because I had a cancerous tumor removed from my lower lip.  At first, I thought the tumor was a cold sore that just wouldn’t go away.   I had my doctor look at it and she sent me to a dermatologist.  The dermatologist told me that the tumor needed to be removed and made an appointment for me to see a plastic surgeon.  Consequently, the plastic surgeon removed the tumor in a surgery that took 2 1/2 hours to perform.

He removed 1/3 of my lower lip.  Fortunately for me, I have no scarring from this surgery.  However, I have no feeling in my lower lip and my lips become very dry.  I have to use a lip moisturizer every day, all day long!  The surgery was very painful.  I couldn’t eat normally or talk for a few days.  I lost 17 pounds in one week!  To this day, I have a very mild speech impediment.  Words that are formed by your lips i.e. words that begin with the letters b or p are difficult for me to pronounce.

Note:  Your lips are very sensitive and contain a lot of nerve endings.  Most of these nerve endings were removed in my lower lip.  The lip tumor was diagnosed by pathology as a squamous cell carcinoma – a form of skin cancer.   I don’t mean to frighten anyone here about my experience, only to educate!

  1. I know this sounds strange, but you can sun burn your lips. Once you have done it once, then you are more susceptible to doing it again. I was in Cabo, and my son and I were walking on the beach and doing some hiking. It was hot, so I kept licking my lips and wishing I had some chap stick. Well that night, my lips looked like hot dogs, no lie! I went to the pharmacia and she gave me something. I used it but it felt like I was making my lips worse. I thought well I will use till we get home. I got home and looked up what she gave me. It was for herpes! Which I did not have. My dermatologist said that was making it worse and not helping LOL. So I have to make sure I use a chapstick with an spf of 30 anytime I am outside in the sun. So this is great information and everyone should read this and remember, the sun can be just as bad as anything on the lips! Trust me 🙂

    1. Yes, You are so right! I came down with a tumor on my lower lip that turned out to be skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma). I had to have a plastic surgeon remove it along with about 1/3 of my lower lip. Fortunately, he reshaped my lips and I don’t have a scar, thank God, just a beautiful set of lips that have no feeling in the lower lip. A result of the surgery was the doctor also removed some nerve endings in my lip. A lip balm with at least 30 SPF is a must. For me, I am always using it because my lips dry out very easily. If you don’t have any lip balm available, use vaseline. Just know that ordinary vaseline has no SPF but is good for lubricating the lips to keep them from drying out.

  2. Mick1976 Thanks for your helpful post. I knew that during windy seasons there is a tendency for my lips to become try and boy, if is brake, what pain it cause.

But I never knew that there was a name for it, neither that it could be serious.

your information here proved helpful to many of us who have this experience recurring.

You are saying, these treatment that you have mentioned are good, if the hand or lip irritation is mild . otherwise see the dermatologist?

    1. Thanks for the comments.  If your lip condition doesn’t improve, you should consult your doctor.  Could be something serious like mine was.  Be sure to use a good lip balm with an spf rating for protection when you are outside.

  3. I often get dry lips since I am always on the move, on tours and hikes. I would love to use a product that will help me not get my lips cracked again.

I see your product is aimed at women, after I saw the lipbam with the sunscreen link. Do you think it would be great for men like me? Or is there a better product for us?
